Robin Antin
Regarded as an innovative choreographer, Robin Antin has successfully combined her keen vision and passion for dance into a global franchise with the Grammy Award-nominated Pussycat Dolls. In addition to the Dolls, a group that has been creating industry buzz since its debut in 1995, Antin's standout style can be seen in music videos, television series and feature films.
In the early 1990s, Antin was already enjoying a successful career as a choreographer on music videos for bands such as Smash Mouth, The Offspring and No Doubt. Looking for a new creative outlet, she invited a few of her dancer friends over to play around with new routines and edgy costumes in the tiny dance studio she had set up in the Los Angeles garage of her roommate, actress Christina Applegate. Antin was inspired by the style of famed choreographer Bob Fosse ("Sweet Charity," "Cabaret"), but she set her routines to music that ran the gamut from Led Zeppelin to punk rock to Bjork. With the help of her brother Steven, Antin came up with the perfect name for the group, and when Applegate suggested a performance at the Sunset Strip's renowned Viper Room, The Pussycat Dolls were born.
The Dolls were soon attracting huge crowds and celebrity guest performers, including Applegate, Gwen Stefani, Charlize Theron, Brittany Murphy, Paris Hilton and Pamela Anderson. When Antin joined forces with Jimmy Iovine, Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M and Ron Fair, Chairman of Geffen Records, The Dolls quickly jumped to another level, appearing in music videos and the film "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." Their debut album "PCD" has sold over five million copies worldwide and spawned five hit singles, including "Don't Cha," "Stickwitu" and "Buttons." In 2005, the Pussycat Dolls stage act became a permanent fixture on the Las Vegas Strip when Caesar's Palace opened the Pussycat Dolls Lounge.
Antin received a Video Music Award for Best Choreography in a Video for "Buttons." In addition to choreographing the Pussycat Dolls music videos and stage routines, other video choreography credits include Paris Hilton's "Stars are Blind," Pink's "Trouble," Hilary Duff's "Play with Fire," Nick Lachey's "Shut UP," Sugar Ray's "Every Morning" and Ricky Martin's "Maria." Film and television choreography credits include "Charlie's Angels II: Full Throttle," "The Sweetest Thing," "Friends," "Nip/Tuck" and "Cold Case."
